General Information About MACHU PICCHU
Discover the majestic Inca city of Machu Picchu, situated in the stunning mountains of Peru at around 2,500 meters above sea level in the Cusco region. This archaeological site, one of the world's most important, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains an enigma regarding its original purpose, though it is believed to have been a sacred city or administrative center. For visitors, Machu Picchu is open year-round, but it's important to consider weather variations due to its mountainous location. Between April and October, when the weather is drier and warmer, is the most popular season to visit. Due to daily visitor limits, it's recommended to book tickets in advance. The journey to Machu Picchu starts in Lima, from where you can fly to Cusco in about one hour. Cusco is the nearest city to Machu Picchu and offers several options to reach the archaeological site: by train, by bus, or by foot via the famous Inca Trail. The train journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu takes around four hours, while the bus ride can take approximately three hours. For adventurers, the Inca Trail provides a unique and challenging trekking experience. Machu Picchu is not only a testament to Incan engineering and architecture but also a destination offering a profound connection to history and nature. This journey promises to be an unforgettable experience, blending cultural exploration with the natural beauty of the Peruvian Andes. We invite you to plan your visit to Machu Picchu with us. Free afternoon. Overnight in Lima: (B.) Day 3: LIMA / CUSCO - EXCURSION OF CHOICE: WALKING TOUR IN CUSCO OR PLANETARIUM VISIT Breakfast at the hotel. At the appropriate time transfer to the airport to board the flight to Cusco. Upon arrival, our staff will be waiting for you at the airport to transfer you to your selected hotel. For this day, you can choose between two options: Walking tour of the city or a visit to the famous Planetarium of Cusco. Overnight in Cusco: (B.) WALKING TOUR At 15:00 we will pick you up at the hotel to transfer you to the Temple of the Sun, also known as Qoricancha, which in Quechua language means "Enclosure of Gold". Its magnificence can still be felt within those walls that were once completely covered with gold. The Qoricancha was a sacred place where the Inca god, Inti or Sun God, was worshipped. After the visit, we will continue our tour on foot, heading towards the Plaza de Armas, making a brief stop at the archaeological complex of Kusicancha, which reveals the foundations of eight Inca courts (architectural complexes) in different states of preservation. It is presumed that in this place, where twelve tombs with intact funerary offerings were found, the objects of ritual use (ceramics and textiles), drinks and food were made for the ceremonies of the Inca temple. We will continue our tour until we reach the Plaza de Armas, where we will marvel at the imposing Cathedral of Cusco, noted for its colonial Renaissance structure and that was built on the Inca foundations of what in the past was known as "Suntur Wasi" or Palace of the Inca Wiracocha. The interior of the cathedral features paintings of the Cusquenian school and beautiful carvings covered with gold leaf. After the tour, you will be free for personal activities. We suggest a short walk through the beautiful cobblestone streets of the city, visiting the famous artisans' quarter in San Blas, the Hilario Mendívil Gallery and Hatun Rumiyoc Street, where the famous Stone of the Twelve Angles is located. At sunset, if you go up the side of the Cathedral a few meters uphill, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the illuminated city of Cusco, which will surely be unforgettable. In the streets around the Historic Center, you will find excellent options to enjoy a delicious homemade dessert, a good coffee, a mate de coca or a hot chocolate to warm up your body. You will also find a wide variety of bars and restaurants that will satisfy your cravings. Return to the hotel on your own. VISIT THE PLANETARIUM OF CUSCO At 17.15 hours we will pick you up from the hotel to transfer you to the Plaza Regocijo from where we will go to what is possibly the most original planetarium in the world. The Cusco planetarium is an interesting cultural interpretation center about astronomy and Andean cosmovision, an observatory of the southern skies and a beautiful place surrounded by nature. During the experience of approximately two hours, we will have a brief talk about the Andean cosmovision in the interpretation rooms, where we will also learn to recognize the constellations of the Southern Hemisphere. We will learn about the Inca constellations, different from those of the western world and about the relationship of the Andean man with the cosmos. Finally, weather permitting, we will be able to observe planets, stars and nebulae using the planetarium telescopes from the heights of the Sacsayhuaman neighborhood. At 19:40 hrs we will return to the Plaza Regocijo. Return to the hotel on your own. Day 4: VISIT TO THE SACRED CITY OF MACHU PICCHU / CUSCO
Breakfast at the hotel. At the indicated time transfer to the train station to start the excursion to the Sacred City of Machu Picchu, recognized as one of the wonders of the world and declared Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO. The train takes us to the town of Aguas Calientes, from where we will ascend by bus to the Archaeological Center and begin the guided tour that lasts approximately 2 hours. During the visit you can appreciate temples, squares, terraces, houses, barns, as well as the great biodiversity that exists in the surroundings. It is worth noting that the beauty of Machu Picchu is enhanced by the extraordinary scenery where it is located. Around the citadel, a National Reserve has been formed with an area of 32,500 hectares, which includes a constellation of archaeological monuments, which, in our opinion, were built as part of the Machu Picchu complex and not in isolation. At the indicated time we will return to the town of Aguas Calientes, where we have lunch included and where we will board the train back to the city of Cusco. Upon arrival, our staff will be waiting for you to transfer you to your hotel (B.D.). Day 5: CUSCO Breakfast at the hotel. Free day to enjoy the beautiful city of Cusco. Overnight in Cusco (B. D.)
